Why Aftercare Is Important
Electrolysis is intense, targeted heat designed to damage follicles. It’s important to consider the treated area as a minor wound, pay particular attention during the first 24–48 hours after treatment.
Following aftercare instructions is essential to minimise redness, reduce irritation, and support optimal healing.
Aftercare Guidelines
Do not touch the area (24 hours)
Avoid touching the treated area to reduce the risk of bacterial transfer and breakouts.
Avoid makeup (24 hours)
Do not apply makeup to the treated area for 24 hours. Makeup can transfer bacteria into your pores.
Apply aftercare products (24–48 hours post-treatment)
Apply an aftercare product twice daily (morning and evening) until the skin has fully settled. Suitable options include aloe vera gel, witch hazel gel, or an antiseptic cream. Apply with clean hands or clean cotton wool. All products need to be alcohol free (and this applies to any hand sanitiser too)
Avoid exfoliation and active skincare
Do not use exfoliants or products containing acids, concentrates, vitamin C serum, AHA’s, retinol, or concentrated active ingredients until the skin has fully healed and any scabbing has resolved.
Do not pick scabs
Scabbing may appear after 48 hours and can take up to two weeks to heal. Do not pick scabs, as this may cause scarring or pigmentation. Keeping the area hydrated can help relieve itching.
Avoid perfumed or harsh products (24–48 hours)
Do not use perfumed products or harsh skincare on the treated area. After 24 hours, skincare may be reintroduced, provided it remains simple and gentle (we like Dermatologist preferred products such as Cetaphil and CV range).
Sun protection
Avoid sunbeds or sunbathing for 48 hours. Apply a sunscreen daily (SPF 30 or higher) to reduce the risk of pigmentation
Avoid heat exposure (48 hours)
Avoid steam rooms, sauna, hot yoga, working out, hot baths and hot showers for 48 hours, as heat may increase irritation.
Avoid swimming (48 hours)
Swimming should be avoided for 48 hours to prevent irritation from chlorine and bacteria.
Avoid strenuous exercise (48 hours)
Refrain from vigorous exercise to minimise heat and sweating in the treated area.
Avoid tight clothing
Wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent friction and irritation.
Cold compress (if required)
If redness or swelling occurs, apply a cold compress for 5–10 minutes to soothe the area. Always place a cloth between the cold source and the skin. Do not apply ice directly.
Antihistamines
If swelling persists for several days following an intensive session, an antihistamine may help reduce the reaction.
Hair management between sessions
Do not pluck, tweeze, wax, or thread the treated area between sessions, as this can delay results. If necessary, hair may be trimmed or shaved
Avoid bleaching
Do not bleach hair in the treated area until the skin has completely healed.
